Upholstery is the layered structure and finish covering a piece of furniture — webbing, springs, foam, batting, and the outer fabric or leather. It's what turns a wood frame into something you can live with. Modern upholstery has been around for centuries; the best of it still relies on the same handwork.

There are good reasons to reupholster. Restoring a beloved piece to its former glory. Matching new fabric to a redesigned room. Improving comfort. Changing style. Protecting resale value on an heirloom. We help you decide which reason is driving your project — and whether reupholstery is the right call versus repair, refinish, or replacement.

Full Service Scope

Upholstery, reupholstery, leather, cushions, and commercial seating.

Rahn’s handles the full scope of upholstery work, from small cushion repairs to complete strip-to-frame sofa rebuilds. Leather replacement, residential furniture, commercial seating, restaurant booths, waiting room chairs, and heirloom pieces are all evaluated in-house at the Santa Fe Springs workshop.

Every piece is checked for frame integrity, spring and webbing condition, foam density, and fabric or leather quality before it is covered again. If the frame is loose, it is repaired first. If the foam is worn out, it is replaced. If a fabric is wrong for the piece, the shop will advise against it.

Which Pieces Are Suitable?

The best candidates for upholstery work.

Almost any piece with a seat can be upholstered or reupholstered. The best candidates share a few common traits:

✔

Solid-wood construction (plywood and veneered pieces can also be done, they just have a shorter runway).

✔

Overall good structural condition — no severely broken joints, uneven legs, or excessive squeak.

✔

Antique pieces that have been well cared for.

✔

Contemporary pieces where the original frame was built with quality hardwood.

✔

Anything with sentimental value where replacement is not the goal.

The Upholstery Process

Every stitch, in the right order.

01

Remove Existing Covering

Careful teardown — especially delicate if the covering will be reused. All materials are catalogued as they come off.

02

Inspect Inner Structure

Springs, webbing, foam, and batting are evaluated. Anything reusable is saved; anything failed is discarded.

03

Frame Inspection & Repair

Bare frame is the best time to fix joints, dowels, and corner blocks. Any refinishing or painting to the frame happens now.

04

Rebuild Inner Structure

New webbing, spring re-tie or replacement, fresh foam and batting, hand-shaped padding on arms, backs, and edges.

05

Fit New Cover

New fabric or leather is pattern-cut, sewn in-house, welted, tufted, and fitted. Original cover reapplied when the customer wants it preserved.

06

Final Details

Nail head trim, dust cover, hardware, feet, and finishing touches. Piece is inspected and photographed.

07

Frequently Asked

Questions we hear a lot.

What's the difference between upholstery and reupholstery?

+

Upholstery is the original process on a new or bare frame. Reupholstery is redoing an existing upholstered piece — either replacing only the cover or rebuilding everything down to the frame.

Is my piece worth reupholstering?

+

If it has a solid-wood frame and is in generally good structural shape — almost certainly yes. Reupholstery on a quality frame typically costs 40–60% less than new comparable furniture, and the finished piece will be more durable than most new mass-produced options.

Do you make in-home visits for oversized pieces?

+

Yes. For built-ins, banquettes, and pieces too large to move, we assess on-site. Most work still comes back to our shop for full environmental control, but we can also do certain repairs in place.

Can I bring my own fabric?

+

Yes. Customer's Own Material (COM) is welcome. We'll evaluate suitability for your piece — fabric weight, weave, and durability matter to how it wears.

How long will it take?

+

Most single pieces run 2–4 weeks. Full sofas and sectionals can take 4–6 weeks. Rush service is sometimes available. We give a timeline with every estimate.

Do you handle commercial upholstery?

+

Yes. Restaurants, hotels, offices, medical, and education. We can do fast-turnaround commercial jobs and have completed lobby, restaurant booth, and executive office projects across Southern California.
